A bipartisan group of seven senators on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee has issued a joint statement opposing a deal made by President Donald Trump with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Hill, Politico White House, and NBC News all report that the lawmakers are pushing back against the agreement, which would lift sanctions on Russia and allow its oil and fuel to enter global markets. According to WBAL-TV, some lawmakers described the energy deal as a complete betrayal of Ukraine. [1][2][3][8]

Politico White House reports that the senators questioned the legality of the move by pointing to a congressional ban on Russian energy imports passed in 2022. Representatives from Spotmedia.ro and tovima.com both report that Republican Representative Brian Fitzpatrick is taking action to block the deal by preparing legislation that would force a vote in Congress. [2][4][5]

The Kyiv Independent reports that a Russian lawmaker questioned claims about the fuel arrangement, stating that the agreement was intended to keep oil prices from rising. The recent efforts by Congress follow earlier action in the House of Representatives. As FTMQ Politics reported earlier, Representative Brian Fitzpatrick previously announced plans for bipartisan legislation to prevent President Donald Trump from lifting sanctions on Russian oil purchases amid global fuel shortages. [7][12]

Donald Trump took office for his second term as the 47th president of the United States on January 20, 2025. Congress holds authority over trade restrictions, including the Sanctioning Russia Act passed by the 119th U.S. Congress, which established guidelines for economic measures against Russia following its invasion of Ukraine.
