The Conservative Party has won a majority of seats in British Columbia, taking power in the Canadian province for the first time since 1928, BBC News US reported. Lorne Doerkson, who became the party leader a few weeks ago, will serve as the new premier. [1]

The snap election was called two years early by outgoing Premier David Eby of the New Democratic Party, according to BBC News US. The political gamble backfired as the provincial Conservatives swept to victory in the legislative assembly. [1]

British Columbia is Canada's third most populous province, with an estimated population of 5.68 million in 2025 [8]. Queen Victoria officially proclaimed the name British Columbia in August 1858 to establish the mainland region as a Crown colony [9]. [8][9]

Newsweek and Yahoo reported that the Conservative victory in British Columbia also serves as a political warning to Mark Carney. [4][7]
