A California court denied bail on Monday to Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old Saudi national and former OpenAI engineer accused of planting a recording device in an office, after federal prosecutors said he received support from the Saudi government. The BBC and Sky News reported that prosecutors deemed Alfozan a flight risk who planned to flee the United States. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]
According to the BBC, a court filing in California showed that prosecutors accused Alfozan of having considerable support from the Saudi government. Prosecutors claimed he was in frequent communication with a member of the Saudi royal family, as CBS News also reported. The BBC added that a member of the Saudi military paid for a one-way flight to Saudi Arabia for Alfozan's wife and son after his arrest. The Saudi government did not immediately respond to requests for comment. [1][2][4]
As FTMQ Politics reported earlier, federal prosecutors previously charged Alfozan with using a device to intercept oral communications at OpenAI's San Francisco offices. The hidden recording device was found wrapped in toilet paper and plugged into a television USB port inside an executive conference room. OpenAI utilized its own artificial intelligence models to help identify Alfozan as the suspect behind the device. [10]
Alfozan will remain in custody while awaiting his trial. The Saudi government has not publicly commented on the claims made in the court filing. [1]
