About half of United States adults never use chatbots, according to a report from the Pew Research Center. The survey revealed that a majority of non-users cite a lack of interest, privacy issues, or concerns about accuracy as their main reasons for avoiding the technology. [1][2]

The Pew Research Center surveyed 5,119 United States adults between February 17 and February 23, 2026. Every respondent in the study was a member of the center's American Trends Panel. The findings are an excerpt from a broader research project conducted in June 2026 that analyzed how Americans interact with and view artificial intelligence. [1]

A chatbot is a software application or web interface built to converse through text or speech, as Wikipedia describes. Modern chatbots often rely on fine-tuned large language models, and organizations commonly deploy them for customer service and support roles. [4]

Pew Research Center stated that tracking the growth of artificial intelligence remains a key priority. The organization stated that public opinion research helps decision-makers, journalists, and the public understand how these digital tools impact individuals and society. [1]
