Negotiators from Russia, Ukraine, and the United States will meet in Abu Dhabi next week, the Atlantic Council reported. The upcoming meeting marks the first time in months that representatives from all three nations will gather for peace discussions regarding the conflict in Ukraine. [1]
The Atlantic Council reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin is using negotiations to gain time and extract concessions. The outlet stated that the primary objective of Putin remains establishing political control over Ukraine and weakening American and Western support for the country, which complicates the stated goals of United States President Donald Trump. [1]
As FTMQ Politics reported earlier, President Trump recently suspended several newly approved sanctions against Russia right before they took effect. Trump defended his decision by stating that waiving the sanctions was necessary to keep Moscow engaged in peace negotiations. However, lawmakers from both major political parties in the United States Congress criticized the waiver, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that pausing the sanctions serves as a reward for Russia. [3]
The long-running international tension between the two nations escalated into a full Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. International organizations, civil society actors, and governments worldwide had expressed reactions during the initial military buildup that began in March 2021. [2]
