Representative Haley Stevens has endorsed Republican candidate Mike Rogers over Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed in the Michigan United States Senate race, Roll Call and Politico reported. ABC News reported that Stevens appeared alongside Rogers at a church in Detroit just days before the election. According to Roll Call, Stevens had narrowly lost the Democratic Senate primary to El-Sayed earlier in the summer. [3][6][7]
The endorsement created immediate friction within the state political organization. The Washington Post reported that the chair of the Michigan Democratic Party stated Stevens is no longer a member of the party. Politico described the endorsement as a significant blow to El-Sayed in the final days of his campaign and an escalation of an ongoing feud between the two politicians. [2][3]
President Donald Trump responded positively to the endorsement. The Hill and Al Jazeera both reported that Trump said he would love to have Stevens join the Republican Party. NBC News also reported that Trump publicly applauded Stevens for making the cross-party endorsement of Rogers. [1][8][9]
Stevens has served as the United States representative for Michigan's 11th congressional district since 2019, representing most of urbanized Oakland County and several northern suburbs of Detroit. She previously worked for the Treasury Department during auto rescue efforts before serving on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce and the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. [12][15]
The unexpected endorsement comes in a closely watched contest that Roll Call noted could help decide which party holds control of the United States Senate. [7]
