Representative G.T. Thompson told reporters on October 5, 2026, that he disagreed with OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman over accepting negative outcomes from artificial intelligence. Politico Congress reported that Thompson stated he is never willing to accept bad results from the technology. [1][4]

The comments followed an interview with Politico Europe where Altman argued that society should accept certain negative events because of the benefits artificial intelligence provides. Politico Europe reported that Altman sought to separate his views on regulation from those of competitor Anthropic. [2]

In a separate report by Politico Europe, Altman named French President Emmanuel Macron as the world leader who stands out for his approach to artificial intelligence. Altman called Macron extremely thoughtful about the direction of the technology. [3]

Altman has served as the chief executive officer of OpenAI since 2019. The company developed foundational models including ChatGPT, which launched in 2022 and secured significant funding from Microsoft. [4][5]
