Democratic candidates swept to victory in the United States midterm elections, taking control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives from Republicans. The BBC, NPR Politics, KCRA, and WESH all report that Democrats won majorities in both legislative chambers. NPR Politics notes that this victory gives the Democratic Party full control of Congress for the first time since 2023. [1][5][6][7]

The election outcome shifts the balance of legislative power as Congress considers foreign policy matters. The BBC reported that the ongoing war in Iran began in February. According to AP News and the Wall Street Journal, Donald Trump stated that the war in Iran was partly to blame for the Republican losses in the midterm elections. [1][8][10]

Congress is established under Article I of the United States Constitution, which was ratified in 1788 and became operational in 1789. Its constitutional authority includes enumerated powers to declare war, raise military forces, collect taxes, and regulate foreign commerce. [13]

Attention has now turned to how the new Democratic majorities will address United States foreign policy moving forward. The BBC, KCRA, and WESH report that lawmakers are now examining what steps the new majority can take regarding executive authority and international relations. [1][2][6][7]
