United States President Donald Trump claimed on Monday that Brazil's presidential election results were rigged following the victory of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Politico White House, The Hill, Reuters, Le Monde, Bloomberg, and The Telegraph all reported that Trump described the election as looking rigged after the left-wing incumbent won reelection. Politico White House noted that Trump provided no evidence of fraud to support his claim. [1][3][8][9][10][12]
The Hill reported that Trump made the statement when asked if he thought the election was fair, stating that it looked terrible to him. Politico White House reported that Trump added that he did not like Lula. Lula defeated Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, in the runoff election on Sunday, according to ABC News Politics, The Hill, and Courthouse News Service. [1][3][6][7]
ABC News Politics and Courthouse News Service reported that Lula overcame a first-round election loss by gaining millions of additional votes in the runoff. Flávio Bolsonaro is challenging the election results and seeking to annul them, according to ABC News Politics, WSYX, and WKEF. ABC News Politics reported that Lula is scheduled to take office for his fourth non-consecutive presidential term on January 5, 2027. [2][4][5][7]
As FTMQ Politics reported earlier, Lula won the runoff election by more than 4 million votes after losing the initial vote earlier in October. Electoral authorities and international figures had previously raised concerns over allegations that social media platforms favored Flávio Bolsonaro during the campaign, FTMQ Politics previously reported.
