Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has secured a historic fourth term as president of Brazil after defeating his far-right opponent, Flávio Bolsonaro, in a runoff election. The Guardian and the BBC both reported on his election victory. The Guardian reported that Lula addressed tens of thousands of supporters in central São Paulo in the early hours of Monday following his win. [1][9]

The Guardian reported that Lula recovered from a first-round defeat in early October to beat Flávio Bolsonaro by more than 4 million votes in the runoff election. Following his win, Lula pledged that dictatorship and fascism will never return to Brazil. WSYX and WKEF both reported that Flávio Bolsonaro sought to annul the election results, while Chatham House reported that he refused to accept the outcome. [1][3][4][8]

As FTMQ Politics reported earlier, Lula's campaign had previously asked Brazil's top electoral court to disqualify Flávio Bolsonaro's ticket over allegations of platform bias by Meta, an accusation that Meta denied. Lula previously took office for a third presidential term on January 1, 2023, after defeating Jair Bolsonaro in the 2022 presidential election. [13][16]

World leaders and governments congratulated Lula following his victory, according to reports by The Guardian, Euronews, and Al Jazeera. Euronews reported that European leaders welcomed the outcome, while Reuters reported that financial analysts forecast a plunge in Brazilian markets following Lula's turnaround win. [1][6][10][11]
