President Donald Trump announced on Friday the creation of a three-person panel to investigate Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook. SCOTUSblog reported that the White House notice outlines a probe into allegations of mortgage fraud against Cook. NBC News, Reuters, and Al Jazeera also reported that Trump established the committee in a renewed attempt to fire the central bank official. [1][5][6][10]
The announcement comes just over two months after Trump informed Cook that he was considering her removal, SCOTUSblog reported. It also follows a ruling less than four months ago by a divided Supreme Court that blocked the president's initial attempt to dismiss her. [1]
In the White House notice, Trump wrote that it is his job to ensure laws are faithfully executed by firing subordinates who cannot be trusted to follow the law and tell the truth, according to SCOTUSblog. Cook has strongly denied the mortgage fraud allegations against her. [1]
