Supreme Court declines cases on school dress codes and gun rights

The United States Supreme Court declined to hear disputes involving a school dress code ban on political slogans and restrictions on firearm possession by felons.

The United States Supreme Court declined to hear a appeal regarding a Michigan public school district's ban on clothing featuring the phrase Let's Go Brandon on October 5, 2026. SCOTUSblog, Courthouse News Service, and The Hill all reported that the justices turned away the case brought by students against the dress code restrictions. [1][2][3][5][6]

According to Courthouse News Service, the Michigan middle school argued that allowing students to wear clothing containing lewd meanings coded in popular slogans could turn schools into nurseries of debauchery. The Hill reported that the slogan is a popular conservative phrase used to mock former President Joe Biden. [2][3]

SCOTUSblog also reported that the court declined to hear challenges regarding Second Amendment rights for felons and municipal COVID-19 vaccine mandates on the same day. The Bellingham Herald confirmed that the justices turned down a request to consider a COVID-19 vaccine case involving Bellingham. [1][4]

The Second Amendment protects the right to keep and bear arms, but previous court rulings have noted that the right is not unlimited and does not prevent prohibitions on firearm possession by felons. By declining to take up these appeals, the Supreme Court leaves the lower court decisions in place. [1][8]
