Billionaire Elon Musk has become the largest individual political donor in modern American history ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. CEOWORLD magazine reported that a Washington Post analysis of Federal Election Commission filings published on October 23 found Musk contributed about 446 million dollars to the 2026 midterm elections. Most of the spending is directed at helping Republicans retain control of the House of Representatives and the Senate. [1]

Outlets differ slightly on the exact total of Musk's political contributions due to varying calculation cutoffs. CEOWORLD magazine reported that The Hill placed the total at more than 442 million dollars, while Bloomberg reported his contributions exceeded 445 million dollars. Forbes estimated the midterm spending at nearly 450 million dollars. Citing the filings, Billionaires Africa reported that Musk's spending is approximately three times higher than the next largest individual donor in this election cycle. [1][5][6]

As FTMQ Politics reported earlier, Musk previously added tens of millions of dollars to political committees supporting Republicans, including a 76 million dollar contribution noted by Politico. As of October 2026, Forbes estimates Musk's net worth at 1.1 trillion dollars, while the Bloomberg Billionaires Index places his net worth at 1.04 trillion dollars, driven by his stakes in SpaceX and Tesla. [4][9][11]

The massive political spending has drawn strong reactions from political opponents. Democrat James Talarico targeted Musk during a rally, declaring that Texas is not for sale, according to the Guardian. Meanwhile, Yahoo Finance reported that Musk has issued threats against Democrats who plan to launch investigations into his activities if they regain control of Congress in the upcoming elections.
