Dr. Amy Acton, the Democratic candidate for governor of Ohio, pushed back forcefully on Tuesday against an unattributed advertisement circulating online. ABC News reported that the advertisement features Acton's long-estranged mother, who calls her a liar and insinuates that she has mental health issues. The video began circulating online just two weeks before Election Day. [1]

The Washington Post, The Guardian, The Independent, Deccan Herald, and MS NOW all reported on the uproar surrounding the advertisement in the Ohio governor's race. According to MS NOW and The Guardian, members of Acton's family, including her brother, have publicly criticized and condemned the attack advertisement. The Guardian reported that the family criticized Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy for bringing up her estranged mother. [2][3][4][5][6]

Acton, who previously served as Ohio's public health director, is locked in a close gubernatorial contest against Republican nominee Vivek Ramaswamy, ABC News and the Deccan Herald both reported. Ramaswamy is a Republican billionaire who ran for president in 2024. [1][5]

The election will take place on November 3, 2026. Republican incumbent Governor Mike DeWine is term-limited and ineligible to seek a third consecutive term. [7]
