A federal judge on Monday questioned whether the court has the authority to stop federal immigration agents from investigating illegal voting. Courthouse News Service reported that the hearing involved a crucial lawsuit filed ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. [1]

The lawsuit was filed last month against the federal government by the California Nurses Association, National Nurses United, the Voto Latino Foundation, Santa Clara County, and the city and county of San Francisco. According to Courthouse News Service, voting advocates contend that federal officials targeted nine states with a surge of deployed immigration officers to intimidate voters and interfere with the midterms. [1]

California became the 31st state admitted to the Union on September 9, 1850. Voters in the state will also consider Proposition 40, a combined constitutional amendment and statute regarding a wealth tax on billionaires, on the November 3, 2026, ballot. [2][3]
