New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and top Democratic leaders sent a letter on Friday calling on private parking lot owners to ban federal immigration officers from their properties. ABC News, The Hill, and AOL News all reported that officials want property owners to prevent Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents from using their garages as staging areas. [1][2][3]
The request comes shortly after federal immigration officers shot a man in New York City, according to ABC News. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, and dozens of state and local lawmakers signed the letter alongside Mayor Mamdani, ABC News reported. [1]
The elected officials told garage and lot owners that the city needs their cooperation to limit federal staging locations, ABC News reported. The letter reflects an effort by local and national Democratic leaders to curtail federal immigration enforcement activities within New York City. [1][2]
