President Donald Trump did not rule out having Senate Republicans refuse to seat former Representative Mary Peltola if she wins the 2026 Alaska Senate election against Republican incumbent Senator Dan Sullivan. The Washington Examiner reported that Trump made the comments following allegations concerning ballot confusion in the state. The Alaska Beacon, PBS, and The Guardian also reported that Trump has called for Peltola to be criminally charged and removed from the race. [1][2][3][8]
The controversy surrounds claims that the Democratic campaign recruited a retired schoolteacher named Daniel J. Sullivan, Jr., who has no prior political experience, to run on the ballot. According to the Washington Examiner and The Hill, Trump called the alleged recruitment voter fraud at the highest level, claiming the shared name was intended to create voter confusion. Politico reported that Trump and Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski have both criticized Peltola over the report. [1][6][11]
The Hill reported that Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy, a Republican, ordered an investigation to determine whether Peltola's campaign violated state law. The New York Times also reported that the governor ordered the state probe into the claims surrounding candidate recruitment. As FTMQ Politics reported earlier, House Republicans have also launched an investigation into the allegations. [5][9][15]
Peltola served as the U.S. representative for Alaska's at-large congressional district from 2022 to 2025 and is a member of the Democratic Party. Incumbent Republican Senator Dan Sullivan is seeking a third term in the Senate. The 2026 United States Senate election in Alaska will take place using ranked-choice voting. [12][14]
