Ukraine Starlink satellite service restored following disruptions
Ukrainian military forces faced severe communication disruptions after access to Starshield satellite services was restricted, raising concerns over dependence on commercial technology.

Ukrainian military forces were forced to cancel drone missions after sudden restrictions were placed on Starshield, the military grade version of SpaceX satellite service Starlink. The Atlantic Council, Politico, and The Hill all reported that the restrictions interrupted Ukrainian military communications, causing dropped connections and lowered operating speeds. [1][2][4]
Connectivity was restored by October 15, according to reports from the Atlantic Council and Axios. Politico reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the outage a very dangerous and unpleasant surprise during a meeting with European Union leaders in Brussels. The Atlantic Council noted that the full reasons behind the disruptions remain unclear. [1][2][12]
United States President Donald Trump denied limiting Ukraine access to the satellite system. The BBC and The Hill reported that Trump denied responsibility for the restrictions, stating that neither he nor SpaceX owner Elon Musk caused the outage. However, the BBC noted that Reuters reported the order originated inside the White House, while Musk suggested government involvement. [3][6]
United States lawmakers are demanding answers from administration officials regarding the restrictions. The Hill reported that four Republican senators joined Democratic colleagues in pressing the Pentagon for information. The Guardian reported that United Kingdom Defence Secretary Wes Streeting visited Washington to urge continued support for Ukraine, noting he was reassured directly by United States Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth that the service was restored. [5][7]
SpaceX activated the Starlink satellite service in Ukraine in February 2022 to replace communication networks damaged during the war. As FTMQ Politics reported earlier, speed limits on the network previously disrupted Ukrainian drone and air defense operations during Russian missile strikes in Kyiv. Politico and Euronews reported that the European Union is now facing pressure to develop alternative satellite systems to support Ukrainian forces. [2][10][13][14]
