Ukraine faces Starlink connectivity restrictions as Russia develops satellite alternative

Ukrainian forces encountered restrictions on SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet services while Russia moved forward with deploying its own satellite communications system.

Ukrainian military forces experienced restricted access and slowdowns on the Starlink satellite network, which provides vital battlefield internet connectivity. The BBC and The Hill reported that Ukrainian forces faced disruptions to Starlink and its military-grade version, Starshield. Elon Musk stated that the United States government and military officials may be behind the speed limitations on Ukrainian drone operations. [3][4][6][7]

The restrictions created operational challenges for Ukrainian defense efforts. As FTMQ Politics reported earlier, Ukraine stated that speed limits on the satellite network disrupted its drone and air defense operations. The BBC described Starlink as the backbone of military communications in Ukraine, noting that Ukrainian drones rely on the system to remain connected over long distances and resist jamming. [3][15]

SpaceX activated its Starlink satellite internet service in Ukraine in February 2022 to replace communication networks degraded during the conflict. Axios reported that Starlink satellite services were later restored. Meanwhile, Українські Національні Новини reported that the European Union is negotiating Ukraine's association with its own satellite communications system following the disruptions. [2][9][12]

At the same time, Russia is deploying a domestic satellite communications network called Rassvet to serve as an alternative to Starlink. According to the Atlantic Council, the Kremlin is creating this network to provide domestic low-earth orbit satellite coverage, raising security concerns for the conflict in Ukraine and global space safety.
