An American woman accused of training with the Islamic State group told federal law enforcement officers that she was trying to fit in and never involved herself with the terrorist organization, according to testimony in a Brooklyn federal court on October 16, 2026. Courthouse News Service and Courthouse News reported that Halima Salman was 17 years old when her father moved their family to Turkey and then into Islamic State territory in Syria. [1][2]

At 18 years old, Salman married Abu Ali, a German-Afghan Islamic State fighter, according to Courthouse News Service. Federal prosecutors allege that Salman trained alongside wives of other fighters in an all-female battalion. Salman does not dispute the marriage, but her defense attorneys stated that her father married her off into a tightly controlled environment that she could not leave on her own. [1]

The Islamic State, also known as ISIL, ISIS, or Daesh, is an unrecognised quasi-state and Salafi jihadist militant group. The United Nations designates the group as a terrorist organisation. During the Syrian civil war and following the withdrawal of United States troops from Iraq, the organisation occupied significant territory across Syria and Iraq. [3]
