United States President Donald Trump appeared to defend Russia after it continued air attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, the Hill reported. The strikes occurred shortly after Trump announced an energy ceasefire between Moscow and Kyiv, as FTMQ Politics reported earlier. Asked about Russia's continued missile and drone strikes on Tuesday, Trump stated that Ukraine had also hit many sites the day before, according to the Hill. [3][13]
Russian forces bombed Ukrainian power plants hours after Trump's announcement, the Atlantic Council reported. Deutsche Welle Europe reported that Trump separately agreed to allow Russia to supply diesel fuel to global markets. Axios reported that the diesel arrangement followed Kyiv's failure to stop strikes on Russian oil refineries, according to Deutsche Welle Europe. Six Republican senators condemned the decision to import an estimated 2.5 million tons of Russian diesel, the Hill reported. [1][2][7]
Trump denied reports that the United States stopped sharing intelligence with Ukraine, the Washington Examiner reported. Trump told reporters that the United States continues to help Ukraine to reach a final answer, according to the Washington Examiner. The statement followed media reports claiming the administration threatened to withhold intelligence if Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries continued. [4]
The energy ceasefire announcement created confusion among Ukrainian officials, as FTMQ Politics reported earlier. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky previously noted that Kyiv was awaiting details and called continued Russian infrastructure strikes Putin's answer to the proposed ceasefire, the BBC reported. The diesel arrangement has drawn criticism from members of Congress and European officials, according to PBS, Deutsche Welle Europe, and Al Jazeera. [2][5][8][10][13]
