A federal judge plans to appoint a former top federal prosecutor to investigate if government lawyers purposefully misled the court in a lawsuit over a Washington golf project.

A federal judge announced on Saturday that she intends to appoint Jessie Liu, a former United States attorney for the District of Columbia, to investigate whether government officials and lawyers intentionally misled the court. PBS and The Guardian reported that Liu will examine the actions of attorneys and officials from the Department of the Interior and the National Park Service. The investigation stems from a lawsuit challenging a project to renovate a historic public golf course along the Potomac River. [1][6][7][8][9]

PBS reported that the administration plans to close the East Potomac Golf Course and park on Nov. 15. The administration intends to construct a championship level golf course capable of hosting major events. The appointment of a special master by the judge aims to determine whether government representatives were truthful during the ongoing legal proceedings. [1][6]

As FTMQ Politics reported earlier, the court previously questioned the administration over plans to alter East Potomac Park despite an active court order prohibiting work at the site. Hundreds of trees were cut down during initial work, and the court later launched an inquiry into whether Justice Department lawyers misrepresented the government's actions regarding the site.
